Things to keep in mind on the renal diet
1. Eat more protein
Proteins are essential for building and maintaining muscles and for the immune system function.
2.Keep sodium low.
High level of sodium can cause fluid retention.
3.Lower phosphorus intake
Since the kidneys can no longer regulate the excess phosphorous in the body, then you have to take in less to protect your bones. Too much phosphorous in the body causes calcium to be depleted from the bones
4. Watch potassium intake
Most of the West Indian fruits and vegetables are high in potassium so this is a big struggle for me. I have to eat them sparingly and savour every morsel.
High levels of potassium can affect your heart. Get a list of foods high, mid and low in potassium and be conscious of your intake. It's okay to have one high potassium food a day.
5. Enjoy your meals
When you no longer have the luxury of having your kidneys clean your blood and eliminate waste through the urine, then you have to be vigilant about the foods you eat.
Make your food work for you not against you.
